A practical way to understand Codex CLI

AI Router Oct 9, 2026

A small repository task is a practical way to understand Codex CLI. Follow how an instruction becomes a model response, a tool call and a local diff, then inspect the permission boundary before trusting the result.

Trace one request end to end

A coding agent is easier to understand when you follow one request through the system: prompt, model response, tool call, local result, and review. Instead of memorizing a large codebase, choose a small change and observe which component handles each step. This method applies to terminal agents generally; repository layouts and APIs vary by release.

Find the command and model boundary

Use the official Codex documentation and the version of the source you are studying. Start with a clean, disposable repository and ask for a read-only explanation of one file. Then request a small edit. Inspect the diff and command history to distinguish model-generated text from actions performed by local tools.

Follow a tool call in source

When reading source, locate the command entry point, conversation or thread state, model client, and tool registry. Trace how permissions are checked before a file write or shell command. Follow one function call at a time, using tests and types to confirm assumptions. Avoid relying on an old file path because active projects reorganize their code.

Review the resulting patch

For safe experiments, use version control, keep secrets out of the repository, and limit the agent to a narrow folder. Review every patch before applying it to important work. If a tool can access the network or execute shell commands, understand that boundary before enabling it.

Use current documentation

This source-reading exercise explains architecture but does not prove that every answer is correct or that a coding agent can safely work unattended. Keep tasks observable and reversible. Current setup, features and permission behavior belong to the official documentation for the exact release you use.
