What Actually Causes Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is fundamentally sensory conflict.

Your inner ear's vestibular system detects acceleration via endolymphatic fluid movement — it registers every turn, brake, and acceleration. But when you're looking down at your phone, your eyes are fixed on a still screen, telling your brain "nothing's moving," while your vestibular system is screaming "we're speeding up, slowing down, turning." The brain's response to receiving two contradictory sets of signals is — "I've been poisoned." So it triggers a defense mechanism: nausea and vomiting.

This is the sensory conflict theory — the most widely accepted explanation for motion sickness.

It also explains why drivers don't get sick but passengers do. Drivers anticipate every acceleration, deceleration, and turn, and their bodies compensate proactively. Passengers are passive — you don't know if the next second will be a brake or a turn, and your body can't adjust in time. Looking at a phone makes it even worse than looking out the window because your field of view shrinks, visual input becomes completely motionless, and the conflict maxes out.
