My 2026 Dev Setup

Annual setup post — less a recommendation, more a receipt of what actually survived.
The core three
- One editor. Still the same one as last year. The plugin list shrank again; LSP and a decent theme do most of the work.
- One terminal. A multiplexer, a fuzzy finder, and shell history that syncs. That is the whole trick.
- One notes file. Everything lands in plain markdown in git. Search beats folders.
The homelab in a drawer
A mini box runs the family services: photos, notes, this blog's preview deploys. It draws less power than the router it sits next to. The rule stands: anything that needs more than drawer-scale maintenance gets deleted or paid for.
What got deleted this year
Three SaaS subscriptions replaced by sixty lines of script. Two apps replaced by their web versions. One self-built tool replaced by not needing it.
The setup keeps getting smaller. That is how I know it is getting better.
